The Air Handling Unit (AHU) is a core component of HVAC systems, primarily responsible for filtering, cooling, heating, humidifying, dehumidifying, and distributing air to provide clean air and a comfortable environment for buildings or industrial facilities. A robust and durable enclosure is essential to protect air handling units from harsh environmental conditions such as rain, snow, dust, smog, UV radiation, and extreme temperatures. A well-designed enclosure not only extends the equipment’s service life and reduces maintenance costs but also enhances operational safety by minimizing the risks of electrical leakage and accidental contact.

Choosing the Right Panel Materials
Air handling units operate over long periods in complex environments, requiring a balance of structural strength, thermal insulation performance, corrosion resistance, and operational efficiency. Compared to traditional single-layer metal sheets, sandwich panels have become the mainstream choice for the casings and panels of modern air handling units. Combining metal skins with a high-performance foam core enables air handling unit panels to offer protection, thermal insulation, lightweight properties, and durability in outdoor environments, making this an ideal material solution for unit casings and enclosures.

01. Skin Material Options
Metal skins are the preferred choice for air handling unit panels. Common options include aluminum sheets, galvanized steel sheets, and galvalume steel sheets (aluminum-zinc coated steel). These materials offer excellent weather resistance, allowing them to withstand prolonged exposure to rain, sunlight, dust, and other environmental factors. In addition, their superior heat resistance enables them to maintain structural stability and mechanical strength even under intense solar radiation or elevated operating temperatures.

☑ Aluminum Sheets
Aluminum is lightweight and highly corrosion-resistant, making it ideal for applications requiring reduced weight and long service life.
☑ Galvanized Steel Sheets
Galvanized Steel provides high strength and cost-effectiveness, making it suitable for general industrial equipment.
☑ Galvalume Steel Sheets
Galvalume Steel combines excellent corrosion resistance with enhanced heat-reflective properties, making it suitable for harsh outdoor environments.
02. Insulation Core Material Options
The foam core within the sandwich panel not only provides thermal insulation, minimizes thermal bridging, and reduces overall weight, but also enhances the panel’s rigidity. Common core materials include PET foam, XPS foam, and PU foam.

☑ PET Foam
Particularly suitable for applications requiring high durability, high-temperature resistance, and sustainable construction.
☑ XPS Foam
XPS (extruded polystyrene) foam offers excellent thermal insulation, low water absorption, and superior dimensional stability.
☑ PU Foam
PU (polyurethane) foam features very low thermal conductivity and exceptional insulation performance. It helps reduce energy loss and improves the overall operating efficiency of air handling units.
